Rarely has an essay so immediately grabbed me in its first paragraphs. Partly because I’m implicated! But the framing is also just fun. Look forward to finishing the story and finding out who’s the killer.

Thanks, Ted! Please do let me know what you think. This is maybe the most provocative thing I written (implicating, as it does, so many scholars whose work I love!), but I did have fun writing it, so I'm glad that's coming through.

What I've read so far is persuasive. I think you're right that there is nothing inherently postcritical about this method. You register my effort to be cautious and to characterize this as descriptive rather than explanatory. But even in description there can be a "signal hidden in the noise."

Yes, and the question of how that signal gets into the noise (which is very tempting to ask!) is I think, the flip side of the question of critique as we normally understand it (where the answer is generally something about the conditions of production of the work of art).
