So... I hate to disagree with Sir Pterry, but I think this advice was relevant when fantasy was less diverse. Read the new stuff. Read widely IN the genre, because it has breadth like never before.
You can skip most of the old stuff. You probably HAVE read too much of that.

Ignoring what's happening in your genre when so much is happening? Less great.
Like, just thinking of how often cis writers try to do "oh no biological sex based catastrophe" and fuck it up because they don't read enough trans writers
Just always took that to mean not exclusively read in your chosen genre.
