Is the receptionist a woman? I’ve found that the expectations of men in terms of dress code at work is always way more policed than it is for women. I got in trouble once for wearing shorter pants at work but my coworker was wearing a black unitard with Timbs…it was bonkers
Oh yeah, it’s definitely a sexism and misogyny. How many times have I heard men make beyond the pale comments about the appearance of a women they work with? This is almost assuredly overflow from that mindset. Next stop, you should smile more.
I understand. You're right 100%—it's arbitrary and inconsistent. My feeling is that it's a sort of placeholder for power over employees that has remained easy for management to get away with, so they do to keep employees in line.

When I worked for the @hudsonbooks.bsky.social I had a day off and was asked if I could come in because the big bosses were planning to come through and they wanted to introduce me as their best employee. This was before they made me quit for being mentally ill if course
When I got there they told me I had to be in uniform even though it was my day off. I was like, "oh you didn't want me to make an impression for myself you want me to make a good impression for you" I told them I suddenly had plans
This legitimately has me so irked. I didn’t know we HAD a dress code. The receptionist is always wearing sportswear. I’ve worn SWEATPANTS to work before. 11 inch inseams are the limit???? Hello?????????
i’m sure it does somewhere, and I think the main reason it happened was because a certain manager randomly decided to pop in. Otherwise, I can’t imagine that it would have been an actual issue.

Was it the specific manager that sent you home?

One weekend I thrifted five of the ugliest shirts and five hideous ties, and wore them that week. No one ever said a WORD to me about it.
The coworker was later fired for other unrelated reasons.
Breaking down pallets, sweating my ass off - but God forbid I roll up my sleeves or I'll get questioned.
