Pretty sure they were called O-grades. I wasn't in school back then, but the O Grades were swapped out for Standard grades in the mid 80s

O Grades (followed by Highers, followed if you were going to Uni by SYS - Sixth Year Studies). Maybe if you were in a private school you might have followed the English curriculum and exams.

Scottish education was ‘O’ grades in 4th year then highers in 5th year then depending on results and how many subjects you wanted for uni, more highers or 6th form studies.
