Could you take a screenshot of what Materialize looks like on your end and share that?
Additionally, you already have the Diffuse layer ready?
You clicked the O under the diffuse section & opened the diffuse png texture?
When you say refuses to load what does that mean? Are you getting an error? Is it crashing?
Just place the Materialize folder onto your desktop, open it, and run the executable within.
Then here's me opening a diffuse file from my desktop:

In case need assets to test stuff out too!
- This program lets you load an image & create PBR materials from it!
You can adjust each map in the program, changing how the final result renders in SL.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIGwejBezi4 goes over the entire process, explaining each map type & its effect on textures.
There's 2 specific settings you need to change in Materialize in order to successfully upload your materials to Second Life -
1. Change your file export type to PNG
2. Under Settings, change "Normal Map Style" to Maya.
- This helps you package the maps created in Materialize into the required file type to upload materials! If youβve exported your maps correctly, this makes it pack them together.
Once you open the diffuse it automatically detects your other maps & loads them, too!
Iβd suggest using commercial-free images to create textures from, especially if you intend to sell products with it. https://unsplash.com/ is a decent site with images you can use!
S/O to https://community.secondlife.com/forums/topic/513330-useful-free-programs-for-pbr-material-creation/ that introduced both programs to me! The https://aiaicapta.in/gltf-packer/#basic-usage is courtesy of their webpage!
