You know, I believe that hate & racism are learned behaviours and as we get older they become a choice. The fact that you see the injustice and systemic racism means you have empathy & intelligence. Two things society is short of at this moment.
That’s very kind of you to say. I believe that as well, that they are learned behaviors. When I was very young my mom took me to see A Hiding Place. It’s about the holocaust. It shaped my thinking about how we treat each other. I believe we have more to offer each other if we work together.
Yes, that’s the one. I was 6 and she really wanted to see it, so she packed a Barbie and some quiet toys for me and we went. I was riveted by the story, and the fact that there had been such cruelty made a huge impression on me. I never forgot it.
My mom married a black man when I was a kid, her third husband and another unfortunate disaster. But I was embraced by a loving family who took a shy little girl and made me feel safe and loved. My new grandma was a great cook, a very sweet soul, and a kind person. So much of her love shaped me too.
