Most social media turns into an echo chamber, which makes sense as its giving you what your want to see. X just seemed to force arguments on you, that you didn't want in the first place

I don't have any data, but my guess is people who care about choosing their algorithm and recovering are gonna be "progressive"—almost by definition, it's progress from the social media status quo.

Universities for exemple are by far and large progressive, but more known for heated debate about just anything than "echo-ing".

Many of us are affected by US politics, but we don't live in the US. We all are political beings, and I could discuss that angle, but my main drivers wanting to jump out of X aren't related to these buckets. X is a bad platform to have conversations about the topics I use social for.

bluesky has also been a safer place for many friends who were heavily targeted in X, and that also helped them be active is social again.

Note: We have seen some of those foundations shake this past week here, and I hope the bluesky moderation team will take action to ensure we all stay safe.

If bsky starts trying to moderate based off what people do outside bsky, then that will cement the left-right divide between bsky and x, not prevent it.

A free open town square is unfortunately also full of dickheads. We must make peace with this if we want to avoid bsky being a left echo chamber.

Moderating dickheads doesn't imply only moderating the political right.
I'm perfectly fine to end up on a platform where left and right dickheads equally can't overstep the boundaries of basic human decency.

I'm all for moderation. I left x because of the lack of moderation that caused it to become a cesspool of bigotry. So far the moderation on bsky has been excellent.

What sort of moderating do you propose bsky should add?

Nothing really, the notion just sat weird with me that moderating people doing bad things would somehow imply a specific political direction.
If people get kicked because they act like assholes and threaten others (IRL or on bsky), that's not "moderating the right", it's just "moderating".

I'm still in disbelief that we have the opportunity to move our Open Source discussions to an Open Source platform with an Open API. I don't know if bluesky will succeed in building the next decentralized protocol, but they seem to care a ton, and an open social graph is easier to move if needed.

A global town square that incentivizes bullies isn't working for many of us. I enjoy sharing offline spaces with folks with whom I share a minimal base of common values that let us have respectful conversations, even if we disagree a lot of times. We should embrace diversity of online spaced, too.
