Totally agree, the console is fantastic but it just doesn't feel like the control room of a space ship the way other console rooms do

I love the idea of the TARDIS feeling more like a home, I love that you see him relaxing in the armchair. But it feels too much like they went to an old manor, found a room they liked and then just placed the console in the middle of it.

I do like the “tardis console in a living space” vibe though. It’s great that they brought some of that back in Smith/Capaldi’s Tardis with the bookcases and chalk board.

That’s what I mean by the aesthetic, I like that it looks like a home but I don’t think it was executed well. Like if they used this wooden aesthetic on the Smith/Capaldi interior, expanded the bookcases to be more prominent and keep the armchair it would be gorgeous.

The current one is huge, and the Doctor *said* he should put some chairs in it. I'd say add some bookcases and such, too, and take advantage of how much space the console room has!

(Though there probably are more homey rooms inside we don't get to see...)
