I’ve been saying it for years, but the time has never been better. Want to hold down costs to the public? Establish a publicly owned, nonprofit basic good grocery chain or brand. Cut profit out of the equation and improve food access and security while creating jobs.

Since food is a basic human right, it should not be for-profit. The entire supply chain should be for the collective benefit and paying all workers (farmers included) fairly.
In the dying days if it tried some sort of non profit model, it was clearly not viable.
The billionaire class is not going to save us and if this is just another mass transfer of wealth to the top, we are cooked
Food, water, housing, healthcare.
I figure any money saved going somewhere evil like Walmart or superstore isn't really savings. It just pushes the cost elsewhere.
Truly, for a permanent solution to Canada's National security, we should nationalize Petro Canada (including downstream operations), electric generation and any other essential goods & services - pandemic proved it!
Easy enough, you buy one of the few remaining small grocery chains ,keep most of their employees and then expand.
When you see grocery prices in China, you will shed tears for us.
