My great grandfather was an SS officer, my grandpa was part of a Hler youth league. Racism requires you to get really uncomfortable to confront within yourself.
And what about the context of the times? That attitude WAS the conventional wisdom then; it isn't now. And OUR conventional wisdom will be appalling to the generations that come after us.
It's from the right wing media playbook, Google Ed Millibands father in the UK. I was there when Brexit was happening there is so much that is similar in the Canadian Conservative campaign now. They blame everyone, use 3 word slogans and offer the world. Look to the UK to see how it turns out!
I think they're confusing people who behave like their parents (trump, musk), with people who actually grow up and learn how their parents were flawed products of a different era.
As a native in Canada, PP is trying to bring fire. Mark Carney addressed it and made a sincere stand where he doesn't share his father's opinion. PP's glowstick isn't fooling anyone 👍
Do I get to go hunt down the children and grandchildren of the people who put my grandfather in a residential school and lecture them and call them racist? Cause that would be bizarre behaviour. We are not our parents. We can only strive to be better if we disagree with their beliefs.
My dad was racist. He was, happily, not allowed to use racist language (thanks mom). He was a product of his times and it is up to me to be anti racist. It can’t be uncommon. Especially for Boomers.
Conservatives are essentialists. They can’t comprehend that people can be more than one thing at a time or change. They also can’t comprehend that other people don’t think like them, which is why every conservative accusation is an admission.

100% like wth do his dad’s choices even have to do with HIS capability? Lol. I’m just imagining someone pre-judging me off of what they think of my dad…who is the complete opposite of me. They’d be in for a surprise because we’re total opposites.
If we blame people for their parents misdeeds and mistakes even the evil and bad ones we're no better than they are. It's best to judge on actions not their lineage.
I feel like it's valid to ask - as in the case of Elon Musk and his father - but the response tells you whether it matters further I guess? Distancing yourself or aligning yourself with the views of your parents is an easy enough response.
This is to give Poilievre cover for not getting rid of MapleMaGa type Aaron Gunn plus advance both-sides cover (he thinks) for all his other candidates’ potential bigoted comments. And his own. #cdnpoli
The bias in media and public perception is interesting though. Pierre's wife and her family are considered off limits. Doug Fords MAGA children and wife are considered off limits. Harpers wife and religious convictions were considered off limits. etc.
It's interesting to see this coming from conservatives mainly because many conservatives just copy and paste their dad's racist views.
I think many of them cannot understand the concept of having a different opinion than your dad's outdated opinion.

As an example:
Nobody claims that the values PeePee claims to still live by are inherited…
Do you think he’s going to livestream? I’d pay a couple of bucks to watch.

Carney quashed it via his answer
But with Freeland (for example) she called her grampa one of her political idols
and the man was a Nazi collaborator.
It's fair to suggest Freeland denounce her collaborationist grandad she called an inspiration
And both were *valid* controversies
but Carney solved his with his answer.
But have a father with social power in a genocidal system is something those with privilege should confront. Glad he did.
