I don't see the connection between no budget and austerity. Mechanically this just means last year's budget is de facto extended - so no new spending until at least fall, but no new cuts to spending either.

Still a dumb choice but why would it mean service cuts and corporate welfare?

I’m not disagreeing with that strategic choice in this instance. I like the outcome given the alternative. And not everyone had full-blown Carney-mania. But the mania included “he managed central banks well, he’ll govern well”. Central banks are top-very down orgs & he’ll have deep habits from that

To me, people might have mentioned Carney’s experience, but, ultimately, it started with ‘anyone but Trudeau’, and ended with, ‘damn, we finally have another choice’.

You’re right. That impelled me too, at the determining level of animal spirits. But my cognitive “rider” atop my emotional “elephant” imbibed too many adulatory ideas about Carney. I’m creating some correctives, this one in reaction to him being managerial and not transparent enough about budgeting

I believe Democracy requires diverse loud voices that say “you’re doing it wrong”, because a society needs a lot of eyes on it to make sure it’s run well, to surface problems made worse by well-meaning policies. It’s worth being alert to Carney’s managerialism as a source of problems
