I believe the most common things to cause a "breakdown" are the same as for ICE cars, which are tyres and low voltage battery. The only person I know who's had an EV "breakdown", it was the low voltage battery.

I'm sure this is true, but I also suspect maintenance has a lot more to do with ICE car breakdowns. In other words, you can't do as much to prevent EV breakdowns.

You literally don’t need to do so they’re cheaper to maintain than fossil cars. EV motors are very simple. Fossil engines are very complex and need clutch, gearbox, catalytic converter, complex electronic engine management system. Simplicity =reliability

That's really my point. Another way of looking at it is that when an EV breaks down it's probably because of a component failure you can't predict and can do nothing about. Fossil cars fail more, but often because of poor maintenance/ownership choices. I'd like an EV, by the way, but not yet.

An EV is much less likely to have a critical component fail due to its lack of complexity and few components compared to fossil. Fossil cars fail more often due to their ridiculous complexity. Much less worry than a fossil car.

I know, that's been my point, though I can't say I worry all that much about my old, high-ish mileage fossil car. Reliability isn't what will persuade me to buy an EV over a fossil when it comes to replacing it; modern fossil cars, for all their ridiculous complexity, are astonishingly reliable.

If you read the actual research, the reason EVs break down less is because of fewer components. The things they have in common (12V battery) breaks down the same amount.

You seem to be creating fear of unreliability when the reality is that EVs are more reliable than fossil cars. It’s a really Luddite attitude in my opinion. EVs are cheaper to run because of lower maintenance. The majority of people can charge at home very cheaply increasing savings.
