I posted a job on Indeed. Had to pause it because within a few days, we had an insane number of applications to sort through. And we listed the pay and hours in the listing too. People are getting desperate. It's depressing.

Yeah, there was a period last month where it felt like every day I was calling a friend to talk about their layoff or their life work getting dismantled by DOGE. It's heartbreaking.
I added the thread because I do actually want those people to succeed with a more attuned strategy.

If I were soliciting applications for a new job (which I'm not), here's what would work on me:
-If you're close enough to work here, you're close enough to come in and say 'hi' in person
-Demonstrate you know something about the business
-Make a pitch for what you're offering not for what you want

I feel this. I get cold emails from students asking for jobs and I can't help but think coming in to our advertised office hours would be a good step. But also it's really clear people haven't done research on what I do because their skill set in their resume is completely mismatched for my team.

100%. Make real connections. Even if you don't get a job from meeting someone, you've met someone who might be able to help you out later. Getting to know a business or a person is rarely wasted effort.
