Merz is however proud of his grandfather, who actually was a Nazi. And in Germany it's not a secret that Merz' ideas and policies are shifting the so-called conservatives ever further to the right.
I guess we will see in our lifetime, if he's a Nazi or not.

Pretty sure Merz said he was proud of his grandfather's example of being a town mayor for 2 decades until 1937.

In the last Bundestag elections, the right wing AfD got just over 10 million votes, so.. yeah.

And for some reason it's highly unusual that a German goes around telling how proud they are of their grandparent. Who was a Nazi, obviously, as mayor of a town he could be nothing else.

The percentage of people who do NOT have a Nazi ancestor is tiny. But most people don't mention that. The fact that Merz does is suspicious to most Germans.
And if you keep up with current German politics, that suspicion is not unfounded.
