I just recently found out that the inevitable "unsolvable problems" are the key. Give the desert all the time to solve one their way. WHEN they fail, solve it the forest way, present the solution with a prepared tutorial of what why and how. It would take a dedicated desert fan to oppose this start.
2 years into my current job. I've been quietly adding Characterisation Tests all the time. No fanfare. No presentation about How we Ought to Work. 6 months ago, some of the others started adding similar tests. 2 months ago, someone refactored one of my testsuites. 2 days ago, someone mentioned TDD.
