Medicare recipients who enter Hospice or a nursing home are automatically transferred to Medicaid instead of Medicare. If Medicaid is cut, hospice will no longer help you die in peace and nursing homes will abandon you as they go broke.
You are correct. Medicare will pay for hospice care, but they will not pay for long term care in a nursing home. Dementia patients often end up in nursing homes for a long time.
My sister had Medicare and went on hospice bc she had cancer. Medicare transferred her to Medicaid at that time until she passed. If she had got better she could have transitioned back to Medicare.
