I tend to believe that most voters aren't issues voters, they're"vibes" voters. They look at how they are doing on the day, and vote for or against the incumbent party based on that.

This isn't unfair of these voters, but it is exactly why the political class being so out of touch is a problem.

It's profoundly easy to tie these last several elections to identity politics, but those are extremely interesting and clickable metrics and headlines. Show me the USA net promoter score in voting districts, not inflation adjusted price of commodity baskets.

There has to be some degree to which we measure the actual purchasing power of the median and mode households, not just the inflation-adjusted indices that worked when the Gini coefficient was actually stable across time.
