That’s what I was thinking. I never considered Korine as camp, maybe bd it lacks pageantry, tho it is spectacle. Spring Breakers is probably the most camp. Appreciate your comment! I was genuinely curious to know what others had to say on the subject.
My impression of Gummo is your boy got too much freedom to do shit too soon and made a terrible yet sincere look into small towns a twisted up mess of schlock, pedo adjacent sadness porn. It also felt particularly aimed the type of ppl who we’d later see in Spring Breakers. Nihilistic bizness.
I wasn’t into his films but after seeing him in a number of interviews, I became fascinated with him as a person / artist. Maybe it’s the the same thing that weirds you out - the self indulgence. I tend to like that in an artist. (Gasper Noe for ex.)
I actually love the idea that he is an artist. I mean. I love that what he does we can call art. Art is a big tent. I also think he’s intriguing and his paintings are alright. I enjoy the fact he makes art. I just don’t really enjoy what he creates.
There’s also a bit of the ole “if I had unlimited funds to set up a compound of artists in Florida I wouldn’t be creating shit that makes people puke.” So jealousy, sure. All in all. That he gets to do the work he does give me some hope that maybe the work I do isn’t so wildly out of left field.
I feel pretty much the same way. He intrigues me, he gives me hope, he makes me jealous, I like him as an artist, but I’m not the biggest fan of his art.
