I did say that I could see your point when considering D&D as a system. It is definitely much.more broad than many laser-focused systems. However, I think it is an over-gemeralization to state that it has no goals whatsoever. DMG clearly offers a toolset for creation. Albeit limited. - ThreadSky

D&D is not "broad" it is aimless. Where ad other systems such as blades in the dark or burning wheel use their mechanics to encourage a style of story DnD does not. This can be seen in how the games play when people ignore the rules. 1/2

DnD is designed around a six fight adventuring day with earlier fights being nothing more than speed bumps to get the party to use healing. Everyone agrees this sucks so no one plays this way. In this way the DnD experience is enhanced by ignoring rules

For contrast if you play Blades but ignore the rules for stress or indulging your vice you would end up with a worse game. The system forces you to tell stories about messed up people struggling and failing in a cursed world. Play is enhanced by the system, not encumbered by it.

It is your choice of that system though. Blades would be great if thats what you want. But for many players, they would have to ignore the stress rules to enjoy it (ie they don't want that style of game). My point here is that preference is great, but it does not invalidate a system entirely.

My problem with the 5e+ rulebooks is that they say "there's an ocean out there." Which yeah they always did that, but previous books have gone out of their way to section off a bit of the ocean, and go "this is basic dnd. If you want more, do what you want, but if you don't want to, this is fine."

I hear you. 5e definitely feels even more broad than previous editions, but the DMG for 5e does exactly what you just stated: it lists many specifics while instructing the DM to take or leave what works.

It's not a perfect system by any means (obviously nothing is) but I do hold the contradicting opinion that it isn't without thought or intention. It simply isn't as singularly focused as many others. And that's okay.

That toolset is like calling a handful of wet noodles a hammer, especially if you've read almost any other TTRPG's guidance on GMing.
