AC does have the advantage of taking over most of downtown. FWA has really difficult space limits. But the same space does host much bigger cons, so...?

Maybe Dragoncon has way more funding at its disposal, that they allow sponsors. Something furcons will never do for moral reasons.

I think furry conventions are just... really really demanding of their venues (specifically elevators). We bop around floors and rooms, suit, desuit, go get food or drinks in the room, go to the dance, go up to a room party, back to the dance, out for dinner, suit again etc etc etc

Even though Dragoncon is bigger, I think furry con attendees travel more within the venue per con/per day. I cant think of anything else that would cause such a difference, though I do find it really interesting from an operations perspective.

People complain about the size of DC all the time :p forget your paws in the room? 2-3 hours for an elevator. Reg line wraps around multiple blocks. Raining? Blistering heat? Sucks. That panel you wanna go too? Get in line 2 hours early or you won't get in. And that line will go outside too.

I love FWA but this con grew way too exponentially over the last two years. Even with staff doing their best it's just reached unmanageable numbers at this point. I think 2023 when attendance was around 10k was the sweet spot. Getting anywhere this year is near impossible x..x

Ontop of furries being high foot traffic between floors,
Furries celebrate each other, not just the event, there’s tons of room to room party hopping to see old friends

-Fursuiting means that walking 15 minutes back to hotel is miserable, overheating also becomes an issue, etc

"They don't adequately staff or plan events to handle the demand" is all I'm reading here. Which is generally true of most furry conventions.

Some limit how many people can register to avoid being completely overwhelmed or try to spread out events.

I'm not sure if dragoncon throws any events in a single ballroom that more than half of their attendees feel the need to go to on the same night tho.

We frequently congregate in the same specific place and time which is a migraine for event planners if they don't have the space for us to spread out

Agreed. I've been told Dragon Con sometimes hosts upwards of 50k people in the same space so it is probably doable. Definitely needs some restructuring and work though. For what its worth this con seems to have doubled in attendance from the last two years alone. Construction didnt help either ^^;

This sucks to hear, really. I've been going to FWA since 2011, this year is only the 2nd time I had to miss it. I did want to take a break from FWA and focus more on Megaplex and smaller cons.

Honestly, I stopped attending FWA after 2023, but I always said that if I did go back, I'd probably try to get a room in the Hilton or the Hyatt. Guess that's not happening now 😱
