Von Der Leyen's goals are a natural and appropriate response to recent events. 1) Putin's efforts to restore the USSR under Russian rule, as well as to attain Russian dominance of most of Europe. And 2) Trump's callous and hostile treatment of European nations, including his threats to abandon NATO.

The foregoing, coupled with Trump's being elected a second time and his preference for authoritarian leaders over democratic leaders and their countries, evidences that the US is no longer a reliable democratic nation committed to NATO and the mutually beneficial post-WWII world order & rule of law.
