I just listened to you. The points you put over came across really well. Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer need to commit to a massive increase in funding to improve palliative care. Now(not in a few years). Palliative care shouldn't have to rely on charity which it does now.
I watched my father-in-law fight for breath (he had a stroke and was brain dead) for over an hour after his ventilator was removed. I couldn't help but think we treat animals with animals with more empathy in dying than humans. At least in the US.
My vote( if I had one ) is a yes.. only if they can speak for themselves and make that choice and understand what it means .. people should have the right its a must in my book
Or if they have requested it in a living will which was made when the patient was able to make the choice but because of their deterioration is no longer able.
Thank you, Rachel. This was an excellent and informative discussion of the issues, showing huge compassion for vulnerable and dying patients, as always.
I’ve just replayed your discussion with Matt Frei on @lbc.co.uk .I really appreciated your well considered responses ,concerns of AD & the need to put more emphasis funding etc on Palliative Care.Thank you so much it is such a hard subject as each are individual cases we are discussing & Illness’s
we now have VAL (volunteer-assisted dying) in australia now - but dont know the criteria for it. an important topic.. hopefully it isnt open to abuse and there are safeguards in place for very vulnerable people.
Really well put points about palliative care. I’d prefer to see that as the focus. I worry about the people who are left; I don’t think we’re yet wired up to deal with the potential emotional fallout of this. Amongst medics too.
