One thing to consider, at least the coffee shop owner paid tax in the country where the coffee shop operated, now they don't even do that.

No major disagreement with your analysis, Eliot. The serfdom isn't just digital, though - the whole economy is becoming more feudal for most people, and bad economies intrinsically promote division.

Also, the police/town watch were bigger than the coffee shop owner. Now the tech companies are bigger than some countries.
