But every environmental center I've gone to literally sells birdseed (temporarily stopped due to bird flu, usually they sell it) and say it perfectly fine to feed wild geese as long as it's healthy (not bread). - ThreadSky

Birds seem to be the one exception as "wild animals you're allowed to feed". Feeding deer and other wildlife is illegal in my area. But as I said the environmental center usually encourages people to put up birdfeeders and to feed the ducks/geese healthy options like cabbage (which they go nuts for)

I think the pros/cons of garden bird feeders is debatable, but imo bird feeders in the harsh winter months are fine.
Plus it helps people engage with wildlife & I must admit certainly brings me viewing pleasure seeing the finchs, robins & tits visit my neighbours feeder!

I would definitely say with current bird flu it's not even a debate, don't encourage the birbs of different species to gather in large numbers. Hence why my ecology center has temporarily stopped selling seed. When there isn't an outbreak though it's been encouraged by every center I've been at.
