I remember a bit of controversy surrounding the song. Conservatives were trying to claim the song without really hearing the lyrics.
For what little I know, it seemed like the conservatives here trying to claim Rage Against The Machine as speaking for them...
when they ARE the machine.
Goodness knows what history has been forgotten. And it IS history.
I know some but it will die with me.
So, certain Paul Weller comments probably didn't help.
In the end, I guess it's open to some interupitation... but that's not my reading of the lyrics... and certainly I don't know Paul Weller.
