My sister is in that category & I would caution against assuming that they're fictionalizing afflictions. I'd hazard that a lot of them do actually have health problems that they're desperately trying to latch onto an answer for bc the medical system is failing them. - ThreadSky

Yep. It utterly abandons patients. One of my great aunts was diagnosed with lupus AFTER her death as they found scarring on all of her major organs on autopsy. I often wonder how many docs dismissed her symptoms or considered her an anxiety ridden hypochondriac while she was alive.

Yeah I don’t think it’s by any means everyone, but the type exists, possibly more around charismatic practitioners. Conversely I also know a couple of people who got dangerously ill from thinking that serious medical conditions were chi imbalances or whatever.

Yep--quacks like RFK Jr literally prey on abandoned patients desperately looking for solutions to restore even a fraction of their health. Even with a diagnosis & medical acknowledgment, I went through my phase of "trying everything" but often w dangerous consequence. It's worse when it's dismissed.

And unfortunately, the fact that our medical system is failing so many patients is a big reason why quacks end up gaining a foothold. When you are dismissed, belittled and sick to boot, you end up becoming susceptible to quacks.

I should throw in that my sister was diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis. She was symptomatic for years before diagnosis but it took being on the cusp of liver failure for her to be diagnosed.
