This is its second summer! I am 100% not harvesting my one and only stalk - and I've told my husband and son to leave it alone too!
I was just expecting more than ONE by now, you know? Out of eight plantings.
I'm probably going to plant some more next year.
@markthebronco.bsky.social I found two more tiny asparagus spears from other planting locations today while I was showing a neighbor my garden!
There IS hope for future asparagus! π
Gardening can really piss you off.
I once planted a whole lot of bulbs around a tree. Not one grew and bloomed. It made me wonder if I planted them upside down. π€¨
I really wanted asparagus! I bought two packages of the roots for planting, different brands from different locations!
I think I have 8 flags marking where I planted them, so I wouldn't accidentally dig them up.... and I have one tiny adorable stalk. π€¦π»ββοΈ
I'll probably get more to try again next year.
Meanwhile, the rhubarb I was expecting to have to wait a few years for is trying to take over everything in its second year and I'm going to have to go out and harvest some more this weekend π
They take a few years to establish. Donβt pick them in first two years. Pick only a few in the third year and after that pick for a short period. When you are not picking just let the stems grow and cut to ground when they die back.
