I have seen two problems. One entry is easy but actually getting above help desk now a days is painfully slow/almost not worth it. Second Senior management won't ever quit and companies end up merging their jobs with all the others.

and let's face it with help desk you literally don't need to know anything about PCs. you just have to know how to watch your time, follow guides, and take notes.

I think another issue I see is that companies just expect you to be a master of things but refuse to teach anything. Like I want to learn how to set up an active directory and it seems easy enough but I don't have the supplies off hand to do it privately yet my work also just says only admits of 10+
