Cigaro is my favourite of these
"We're the regulators that deregulate,
We're the animators that deanimate
We're the propagators of all genocide
Burning through the world's resources
Then we turn and hiiiide
We're cool! In denial!"
The bottom line is money, nobody gives a fuck.
4000 hungry children leave us per hour from starvation
while billions are spent on BOMBS, creating DEATH SHOWERS!
With music, a substantial problem with trying to use it to deliver any kind of message is that people don't listen lyrics. You can just second-verse-same-as-the-first all day and nobody notices. They might catch part of the repeated chorus hook, but even that can end up hold-me-closer-Tony-Danza
Actually this is me. My brain, for whatever reason, cannot comprehend singing (despite having been in multiple choirs!), and if I think something might have an interesting message I *have* to pull up lyrics and digest them separately from the music
Personally I don't really get obsessed with a song unless there's something in the lyrics that grabs me by the throat, but I'm assured Other People don't listen to the words
(I discovered Shearwater because someone had their line "charging down the maw of the ocean" in a music-related art post)
On the subject of System of a Down, I'll note that John Dolmayan seems to be kind of a right-wing reactionary, so not understanding art *can even include the artists*
for sure - look at the 2019 Watchmen TV series and it's extremely anti-police message (which is consistent with the original Alan Moore source material), in contrast with the views of its creator Damon Lindelof
