I got so pissed off about everything in Brentford (north of the river) being given a Kew (south of the river) related name I did start referring to it as south Brentford, Chiswick was east Brentford, Ealing was north Brentford...
I think he meant the bit in Powys west of Llanidloes? We regularly talk about north east Wales (Wrexham) and the south east of Wales (Newport), so "east" shouldn't be weird, and yet...
Tbf, 'west Wales' is generally only used for the Dyfed area, rather than Llyn peninsular etc. May be tied in with the south Wales-centric viewpoint, in the same way that the US mid-west is only in relation to the Eastern seaboard.
