Thanks.
So I’m wondering:
How do we define the line between design and development?
As a freelance designer, how much unpaid work is reasonable before I cross into doing what I’d expect a publisher to handle?
Just to be clear—I’ve really appreciated the feedback I’ve gotten from the publisher.
This isn’t a complaint, just something I’ve been reflecting on.
My gut instinct is it's bad if the publisher keeps dragging things out, requiring lots of overhauls/changes while not helping out.
I think something like a time limit for the work you put in (at least without help) might be the most reasonable option.
Something like you'll only do X changes is common for artists, but I think really hard to define for design/development work.
Good luck!
One way to look at it is that a more finished product *should* end up in a better publishing deal than a product you are paid to develop.
But not knowing if that will be certain, makes it a very hard (and unfair) position.
But this gray area of ”almost a contract” is a bit weird. :)
It may be necessary from your point of view and there may be some benefits, but it doesn't make it even. Especially if nothing guarantees your efforts will be rewarded.
