We have a significant number of fires at track level as well. A big cause of these are litter being thrown or otherwise getting onto the tracks. Doors would help prevent.
As a frequent TTC user one very big cause of delays we have is trespassers on the tracks. Those delays are likely costly and I can see these screen doors preventing that issue, if they’re installed at the appropriate stations where that’s a common problem.
PSDs should also reduce suicides and suicide attempts. They do look an operator into a particular layout of the location of train doors. Now electric trains have a life of up to 40 years but they do eventually need to be replaced...
That’s a good question. I’ve always assumed they just go directly from the station platforms. Ours are wide open like the New York ones. It’s easy to just hop down.
This is just one story but shows in the photo how open our platforms are.
I could be wrong, of course. Any story I’ve seen about it was just people going on the track directly from the platform. Staff has access to get in through other ways but lately it sounds like it’s people who are in crisis and I don’t think they’re planning much.

Persons on track should logically be factored into the business case.
These delays get lots of publicity and further push people away from using the TTC - lovingly known as Take The Car during its failures.
