My flowering quince is thriving, even though it is planted just 50 feet or so from the ocean. It survives strong winds, winter storms, and sea spray. #Newfoundland #garden

Come to my house in Connecticut some year (when FOTUS is history) in April and May! They nest here, making weird little woven nests high in the maple trees, and their chicks love to hang out in the quince bushes.
I have a photographer friend who lives in north Georgia, in the Appalachian foothills. He has quince growing in his garden. I didn’t realize orioles eat the flowers….would’ve thought they only liked the fruits.
Orioles are fruit lovers indeed, but their nesting season here is long before my quinces ripen in late summer, so they eat the blossoms. I guess there's a fair amount of nutrition there??
You can hang slices of orange for Orioles too; they adore them.

This is one of the most gorgeous - and deadly thorny! shrubs you can plant.
And did you know that quinces attract songbirds, who eat the blossoms?
If you get any fruit, you can make jam!
