Even if they insist on picking one scandal (they shouldn't), the Garcia case is the one to pick because it's happening now. It's not one that you want to grow worse in the future. The economic stuff will still be there come 2026. If it isn't, then you would have wasted time on it now.

My dumb opinion is:
1. "Doing nothing and letting them shoot themselves in the dick" is an attractive strategy bc it is seen lower risk to the individual politician employing this strategy. I'm not involved in the mess, I'm just on the sideline pointing at the dick shooting.

2. Engaging on what is seen as a "GOP issue" is perceived as ALWAYS bad and dangerous to the Dem doing it. A Dem saying "they are screwing up immigration/USAID/environment" will surely hurt the Dem because they've said the name of an issue that has historically polled poorly for Ds.

Will the public remember Signalgate in 3 months? Probably not, but if the general mood is that the administration has been in an unbroken string of scandals for that whole three months, it doesn't matter which individual scandals have stuck, because it's now one big scandal.

Political narratives get their own inertia after a while, and if you do your job, eventually you don't even need to tie stories to the central narrative. Gravity pulls every story into that narrative on its own. Your job as a politician is to create and maintain that inertia.
