i think Democratic politicians are maybe allowed one "rioting is bad" statement in exchange for at least a dozen "the Secretary of Defense is threatening to deploy Marines against the American people" statements

Tbf, rioting is not effective and is actively playing into the hands of the GOP. Assault on select property? Somewhat funny. Attacking people and burning down businesses dilutes the intention of protest, to provoke public outrage to motivate economic warfare.
I should’ve framed this as a hypothetical, but I’ve gotten in a lot of debates today about the viability of violent protesting. I’ve also been at several protests that got hijacked by Les Mis larpers and clueless people latched on. I s2g, one of these mfs was waving an upside down flag like Enjorlas
For that matter, what does “playing into their hands” do at this point?
They called the national guard, and the marines, into a city. What are they going to do? Call the army on protes- oh wait.
Ignore court orders? Tell the Supreme Court to fuck off?
The point of protest isn’t actual resistance against a power; that’s a fool’s errand. In no world would a civilian force of a few thousand stand a chance against the US military. The point is to motivate outrage to fuel economic warfare like boycotts or general strikes.
Look at what Elon losing his net worth did to his nominal support of Republicans (Ftr, he’s still a POS). Wall Street is currently deluding itself over Trump. Once you see entire supply chains fucked up, that’s when donors will start to flake.
Just stop fighting it and accept tyrannical dismantling of the country, communities, education, worker and climate protections, the safety net, a functional healthcare system?
It’s not for fear, and it’s not giving up. Non-violent protests are far more psychologically destructive than violent ones. I would know. My grandfather internalized his pain as a response to his experiences integrating places, and it ate him up from the inside.
I remember when I stayed at my grandparents’ house, I would be up reading Agatha Christie or a trashy romance novel of my grandmother’s, and I’d hear his heavy tread as he walked up the stairs after 3. He would sit, alone, just watching TV and drinking the watered-down whisky he said was sweet tea.
For the record, the Jim Crow South was equally dire in terms of tyranny, at least for Black folk. Even registering people to vote could get you killed. My grandfather had a cross burned in his lawn as a kid. Non-violent protesting ended segregation.
"Economic warfare" is what the gop has been practicing since the 1980s.
All they want to do is kill the poor, and your recommend doing nothing about it. Or do you still think Republicans listen to facts and reason, so we should just "debate them"
The protest are non violent though. It's the police that cause the riot. By saying stuff like "rioting is not effective" plays into the GOP hands and their framing of how shit is going down. It should be on us and journalist to reject that framing entirely.
I fully agree with you re: framing, and I apologize if I didn’t state that I was discussing the general viability of violent protest as an overall tactic for effecting social change, not this specific instance.
Carmichael’s reasoning of the legitimacy of boycotting is 100% based on an axis of militancy and action rather than effect. It doesn’t matter if the Montgomery Bus Boycott helped the Civil Rights Act of 1957, to Carmichael, the optics alone make it an inferior form of protest. I deeply disagree.
My priority is results, not the revolutionary quotient of an act. Huey P. Newton was in the right place, but radicals like Carmichael and Malcolm X approached ending segregation as a thought experiment, not an initiative. Mind you, neither were raised in the Deep South.

Because I haven’t seen… it.

Check and check… let’s see… uhh… Nuke LA?
Just lay down and take it? For fear of what?
