I like this in theory. However it does leave fools like me out.
My business partner and I run a small incorporated masonry concern in DC suburbs. Our “retirement plan” is when one keels over, one should attempt to fall away from the wall, so as not to cause the other to rebuild it!
Why should I be exempt for tax because I'm retired? Any investment, property, saving or activities I might have that is creating income should be taxed as they are for non retired. You COULD argue that what I get as pensions should not count towards what is taxable income.
1/4 Which is to say that what I get in Pensions should be exempt. What if I have managed to save up a private pension fund of £1M and that gives me an income of lets say £50,000 should this be tax free? Or only what I get in state pensions?
2/4 I have [roughly] 1/2 a UK state pension & 1/2 a Norwegian State pension. In addition I have some income from writing a weekly bridge column & a little private pension. I have savings providing income. Some of them in so called ISA's providing tax free income and some that don't.
3/4 I have no problem with me paying tax. I would not even have a problem if it was a cap on how much one could have in ISA's providing tax free income. It prolongs the privilege of having had a good job and income into retirement age.
4/4 I think there should be an amount deemed the minimum one needs to have a "reasonable" standard of living. Money earned below this should not be taxed regardless of whether you work or not. Above this there should be a progressive tax system regardless of source of income. Feel free to disagree 😀
I certainly don't like paying taxes, but I don't like paying for anything, really. However, I use the roads, depend upon a working government (present company excepted), like having a military to keep me safe and all the other things our taxes pay for. As long as I am alive, I'll pay my own way.
There's no such thing as "dues". Taxes fund our government's ability to provide services. People that are able to pay taxes and don't should be exempt from any societal services. You don't get to buy stuff, drive on roads, etc because all of those take the "government" they don't want to fund.
The "I've got mine; F U" aspect of American society... I'll never understand. People want a just, equitable, safe society, but don't want to belly up to the table and throw their ante in (i.e. taxes).
Is government too wasteful for you? Then get involved and change it for the better. We the people.
I couldn’t fathom hanging out with any maga and am quite happy I come from an open-minded progressive family!
Well, there is my ex bro in law who votes for his wallet, but he’s easily ignored…
