As I remember, there were different tours, and some may be more of interest to a kid. I think there was a lot of storytelling when I was there-- not much for walking around exhibits.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, hang out in Central Park, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, maybe a baseball game? Eat pizza and bagels. If you're there on the first Saturday of the month, the Brooklyn Museum has special activities. Paddle boats in Prospect Park are fun, too.

Natural History Museum. One of the skyscrapers. Highline walk. Open top bus to tick off some scenes. A classic deli. Eat in Chelsea Market - particularly Los Tacos.

Walk across a bridge (Williamsburg or Brooklyn)

And eat in:
Katz's Deli (lower east side)
Joe's Pizza (Greenwich Village)

Empire State and/or Chrysler Building; High Line, Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island trip and the Spy Museum. We struggled to fit it all in!

Open topped bus tour, obvs 💁‍♀️ (haggle with a vendor, get extra days/boat tour thrown in). But if you don't fancy that (😱), looking at the stops/map is a good way of spotting things and orientating.
