I was 5th in line to buy a membership at the very first store opening in Vancouver.
They were great, and supplied quality Canadian outdoor goods for years. Then something happened. Less made in Canada, and more made elsewhere. Then the quality and choices slipped.

…the gear was SO good, that I still have the gortex jacket, and pants that I wore as a sailing crew member for the Swiftsure race in 1997. The pants and gaiters are still good but the jacket has been replaced by…an exact Canadian knockoff made in Vancouver lol. MEC no longer makes pro gear.

Unless it's turned back into an actual co-op, it's still over for me. Having watched the board changes over the middle years, it was apparent that it would be privatized eventually. It was a victim of it's own success and another tragedy of the commons.

I am one of them. Who cares who owns it now, the stab in the back was losing its co-op status. There were 5 million members who could have paid for a new level of membership and easily got the co-op out of financial difficulty. 2 million times $100 = 200 million dollars!!

Yes.. I knew a lot of people who were long time members too.. I think there were 5 million members at one time.. they didn't get an opportunity to do anything.. the whole original co-op philosophy was gone by then.
