At least 10 teams will be happy to pay him his worth. This is normal Bungles management being cheap, and other teams know it. The "others" this will really affect is other Dmen considering going to Cincy in FA. Bungles only spend on O now, I wouldn't go if I played defense.

I'm not defending the Bengals, more pointing out that I think him refusing to play is the wrong move. I think any future contract he'll receive with be front loaded and incentive based to cover his unwillingness to complete a contract. But you're right, teams will want him because he's good.

If that's true, fair enough. I'm not an NFL expert following contract negotiations amongst all the teams so if players are constantly threatening to sit out the season for a new contract, I stand corrected.

Hypothetical injury concerns should have been addressed when he made his previous contract, I don’t feel it’s reason enough to refuse to play the final year he’s under contract. Whether or not there’s a reason to back down will depend on penalties for missing in season games under his contract terms

It was addressed. Now in his last year if he gets hurt, no guarantees. He's just not dumb enough to go tear an ACL and not have any future guarantees.

Bengals can risk it and not sign him to an extension, but they'd suffer greatly on defense.

To finish that thought, if he tore his ACL this year under contract he’d still be paid this year, but you’re right that next year would/could be problematic. That’s not what I was talking about though, I was only speaking to his current contract. The bengals are nickel and diming him, no doubt.

I can be wrong, but I’d think a player who plays in good faith for the duration of their contact will gain more favor and a better contract with their next team over a guy who refuses to complete the terms of his contract. This all assumes the bengals don’t cave into his demands before the season.

It’s best to pay him or trade him. I think that’s the only point we’ll agree on. He’s looking out for his future while the Bengals are only interested in him fulfilling his contract this season. The Bengals are cheap, don’t get it twisted that I support the Bengals here.

What happens a year or two down the line when other players make more money than he does and he feels like he’s better and deserves more? Refuse to play again while under contract? Ah, he’s doing that already. It’s a slippery slope to go down.
