K-1 here. We still have all the proof of relationship info filed away, just in case. Despite becoming a US citizen years ago. Did he legitimately forget sure to their circumstances? Maybe. But he absolutely knew afterwards. The process hangs heavy over you, even once it's done.

An adjustment of immigration status has been possible inside the US for those who marry a US citizen even if they arrived without a K-1 visa.

Could it be that at some point he came into the US with a CR-1 or IR-1?

Some ESTA users who married Americans in the US after arrival did get status adjustments to remain in the country and never leave despite never having had a stickered US visa in their passports.

we're told he should have filed an I-751 and didn't do it in good time. It sounded like K-1 to me because one of his relatives claimed he applied before entering, but you're right, it could have been a different start point.

When I read it I had to look up the I-751 because I couldn't remember what it was.
I was shocked because that came very early in my process, as I then remained a PR for decades.
That's just crazy to think he then skipped to naturalization.

he might have done something in between to rectify his status, but it's weird that they don't say what or how!
I filed for naturalization when my PR card was about to run out...tbh I'm glad I did rn. it makes me a bit harder to get rid of.

I've been here since 1989 but only got my naturalization in the latter part of Trump 1. Because I could see the writing on the wall. Because I have no doubt this will not stop and no one is truly immunized when they break the law and get away with it. Stay safe!

I couldn't work it into the post, but one reason I wrote this was bc of a guy I met years ago who'd missed his I-751 bc he couldn't afford it. I'd borrowed money from a relative to pay mine. My heart broke for him. But that guy doesn't get a humanising news story bc he was poor and Mexican.
