Biting off a bit more than it could chew -- she's almost the size of the sturgeon, surely that cannot be what they would usually go for? Was this more of a playful impulse, maybe?

Kalugas have only sucker mouths, they can only swallow whole prey items. But they can be quite voracious and try to eat animals which are too big.

Thank you for explaining! I was sort of extrapolating(?) from experience of bathing in lakes, where small fish will just "explore" you with their mouths, probably without the actual intent of eating you (though I guess they could want to graze if you had fun algae or skin parasites to offer).

Kalugas are predators which actively hunt other fish. I had also once a smaller (non-piscivorous) sturgeon which used to suck on my hand when I was feeding it with pellets. It can happen that they take something in their mouth even if it belongs obviously to something bigger.
