So then you likely grew up in an era where someone would have had to travel to where you were and look you up. And not only that, but you could opt out with far more ease.

I really think that if you were planning to kill someone, the effort required to find out where they live would not be insurmountable regardless of any privacy laws. If you physically return to your home on a daily basis, people can observe that. We can't all live in bat caves in discreet locations!
Having been swatted, and actually being an American, I’m gonna just say you’re an idiot who doesn’t know what you’re talking about. Your country has better laws than America, so sit this one out sweetheart.
No need to get insulting or patronising. Have another read of what I said. That the principal blame lies with the murderer, not the legislators who failed to ban the data hoarders who in turn made it slightly easier for the murderer to obtain addresses. You really think that assertion is idiotic?
It's interesting that you make that analogy, because part of what struck me as odd about the choice of target for the OP's criticism was that surely your lax gun laws would be a more pertinent target. Or more so, decades of cultural celebration of "killing the baddies".
Your comment quite literally sounds like the legislature in question has legalised and encouraged murder. Which is exactly the sort of hysterical overreach that I was hoping to discourage. I guess I'm pushing sh*t uphill with that ambition. Some of you just need that extra level of drama!
So do we blame everything that facilitated the murder in any way? The company that sold the petrol that the murderer used to drive to the address? The ISP that enabled their internet research?
And once again, since many people seems to have missed this basic point: at no point did I defend the legislative inaction being criticised. I'm just saying it's drawing a long bow to say that should be the principle target of blame.

Ben, from Australia: it’s not the legislators fault they made it so easy to do a murder.
