The death of the monster of the week episode is such a loss to genre tv. The new Disney daredevil tried it for one episode, and it was great, but of course all the time nlibe discourse was about how it was just "pointless filler"

The only X-Files episodes I pop on these days are those. I can't be bothered figuring out where in the mythos I've got to or whatever. I want to see people killed by something living in the woods!
Exactly. Almost all the standout genre TV episodes are (almost) by definition the stand alone ones, and it feels like Doctor Who is the last show to put what arc it has in the background compared to the episodes plot
My recollection of them first airing, though, was that if you stayed in on a Friday evening and caught a big twist in a continuity episode, it was a bit of an event you'd talk about on Monday in a way that just a 'really good episode of tv' wasn't. So I imagine it worked better at the time
I'm binging Justified on Disney+ and same. The irony is that traditional TV with MOTW is popular on streaming services, but streaming services don't like to make it- and when they try "fans" who have had their brains rotted by cinemasins et all whinge
Although to be fair his complaint wasn't about the lack of arc, it was that he thought that a bank robbery was unrealistic. In his show about a blind man who can see.
