NYP is a favorite of rich white NY'ers. They read the WSJ on the train to work in the mornings, and the NY Post on the train home in the evenings. A good racist story really passes the time.
Everyone knows Donald Trump stole at least twice as many bases, hit over 1000 home runs, turned at least 20 unassisted triple plays from center field, and never committed a fielding error in his MLB career. /s
A phenomenal athlete dies and the headline reads like he quit after his rookie season?! The writer is a piece of shit! Henderson ALWAYS performed like a demigod!
Vince Coleman is one of my favorite players all-time. Willie McGee is my favorite player of all-time. Ozzie Smith right there with em. As great of a stealing threat VC was, he never reached Rickey status. Rickey led the league in steals 12 times, runs 5 times and still leads MLB in both all-time.
Nope. I think the best baserunners are those who put themselves in the best position to score and to be a distraction to the pitcher. To do that, you've got to be able to take risks. Sometimes when you take risks, you lose.
"Ricky wasn't as good as Patches McGurney of the Akron Groomsmen" [footage of a baseball game from 1921 where everyone is moving 20% faster than they actually were]
I remember listening to the Scooter in my car on Yankee’s baseball, screaming that Ricky was stealing bases. Before he went to Oakland he was a Yankees star. NYP can go 🤬 themselves.
Years ago, the NY Post had a sense of humor. Coverage was mostly crime, sports and gossip.
Then Murdoch bought it. Every day on the front page is now just a variation of "Biden is the worst president ever!!!" Just a Maga rage machine now.
Keep in mind that NY Post is a Murdoch publication and racism is part of its wheelhouse. If Ricky were white, NY Post would recognize him as one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, players.
Ya know I had to actually see if that was real. I couldn’t believe those idiots would have wrote something so stupid. He was the outright best base stealer the MLB ever had and holds the record for the most runs scored as well. Every time he was on any base he was a threat to steal, even Home Base.
It's a Rupert M publication so the answer is no, there's nothing they can't fuck up (regrettably, most of my novels were published by HarperCollins and that cocksucker owns it too)
Yeah but Beltrán played for both NY teams (I didn't read the article to see if the argument is only base stealing success rate, because both of my grandfathers' ghosts would haunt me if I clicked through to the Post.)
Vince Coleman’s the only guy who came even close to Rickey’s production over just a short period of time, and he fell off a cliff in terms of base stealing after a handful of years
Same. Got to meet him twice and he was delightful.
NY Post is a garbage fire anyway. Fitting that he should pass the same year we lose our beloved Athletics.
Having seen Ricky lead off on a base hit, steal second, then third, and finally score on a pop fly to the right field ... there was no one better at manufacturing an offense.
Every Writer For That Piece Of Shit Newspaper Never Knows What They Are Talking About Especially Since They Think That The Criminal Trump Can Do No Wrong.
Since '82 Phil is a guy who has not left his home, just monitoring TV/radio sports for Murdoch's money-losing Post. Repeating the same column ideas for years, all he does is change the names with special vitriol for people of color. Now behind a paywall no one has to read his hack rants again.
One more thing. Did Mushnick mention in his column any of the live comments on the MLB Network by friends & former teammates of Rickey? (There were heartfelt stories.) Did he go over the stats? My 3 most fearful MLB players are Rickey, Willie & Rose. All they would do was beat you.
For people who are not from NY, this article is written by Phil Mushnick, a man entrenched in the early 1950s. this is not a legitimate critique: Ricky was a black man, which, to Mushnick, means nothing he ever did can equal the feats of white men.
Wow. Just... freaking wow. Guy led the league in steals at age 39. Greatest leadoff hitter ever. Changed the way the game was played for two decades....
These are the same idiots who have ruined baseball by their emphasis on launch angle and exit velocity which has led to more strikeouts, one dimensional emphasis on home runs and fewer players who know how to advance a runner.
Hey, that’s an interesting take! While Rickey Henderson is often celebrated for his speed and base-stealing skills, I get it—there are plenty of other great baserunners too. It’s all about how you define greatness, right? Everyone has their favorites!
This is just click bait. There isn't a single person who appreciates baseball and saw Ricky Henderson play that would say he was a"far" from the greatest base runner. That is basically = to stating he was overrated. Writer loses all credibility with the headline.
The headline must be sarcasm. Ricky wasn't just a good base stealer he was a great all around base runner. He rarely got picked off or thrown out on the bases.
It's all part of the act. They post stupid stuff like this in order to rage bait and get people to argue with them and boost their posts. No one who knows anything takes them seriously.....
What does triples stat mean exactly? Fenway has a tricky outfield and a center that went 420 plus feet. Fenway is near the top for parks that have the highest triples factor. You can’t compare player’s stats without taking into account all factors.
This is such a bullsh*t heading
I followed Ricky during his career He was a gift to the game and it's fans A privilege to watch
He was never called best baserunner Best leadoff hitter yes and true Stolen base all time yes and true
Baserunner? No. PM has to create things to be negative about. Loser
did into the stats and there's all kinds of stuff...some of which doesn't necessarily compute to on-field results for the comparison expressed...Munch's angle
only 3 other players even have half the attempts as Rickey, which reveals his ability to get on base and in play
Comments
So who is his greatest base-runner/stealer, if not Henderson?
R.I.P. Rickey.
Go look at the career stolen base leaders and tab over to stolen base attempts and you'll see the list doesn't change much.

2) Jim Gantner
And the greatest baserunner of all-time:
Freddie Patek
Rickey Henderson IS the Greatest Base Runner/Stealer of all time. "MAN OF STEAL"
Then Murdoch bought it. Every day on the front page is now just a variation of "Biden is the worst president ever!!!" Just a Maga rage machine now.
Resign, Phil.
I wouldn't wipe my ass with either of them.
We could argue ad nauseam aboutwhen exactly was the greatest rea for stolen bases and prove exactly nothing,
In his time, however, no onr did it better
Liken to “Territorial Expansion” spin instead of “Senile Vengeful Fool mouthing off again”
Maury Wills was kinda spectacular too
Rickey's loss is huge. He was amazing. I used to watch the As practice on the UC Berkeley field during study breaks!
NY Post is a garbage fire anyway. Fitting that he should pass the same year we lose our beloved Athletics.
But it is insanely wrong, like saying the US doesn’t have the biggest GDP or Usain Bolt isn’t the fastest ever.
That's why it's now behind the NBA and the NFL.
Watch the game, enjoy the sport, I don’t need anyone to do anything more than that.
Then, I had countering thoughts
I followed Ricky during his career He was a gift to the game and it's fans A privilege to watch
He was never called best baserunner Best leadoff hitter yes and true Stolen base all time yes and true
Baserunner? No. PM has to create things to be negative about. Loser

the only 'far' thing about Rickey is how far he was ahead of anyone else...and how far behind any current player might be
only 3 other players even have half the attempts as Rickey, which reveals his ability to get on base and in play
baseball IS the stat sport
Man’s died ffs
