IIRC, "Grand Prix" had the correct sounds for the F1 cars the actors were portrayed as driving, although they were actually driving F3 cars made up to look like F1 cars.

I expect "Le Mans" had the correct car sounds, because McQueen was a stickler for everything in that movie.

Slightly different, but same gist. I grew up on quads, raced them too. When the Scooby-Doo Movie used two Raptor's in an escape with overlaid generic two-stroke sounds, my heart died a little that day. Zoinks indeed, Shaggy. Zoinks indeed.

Archetype: The first "Terminator", featuring an early Honda CB750 that sound like a 4 when doing the burnout but like a Harley on the highway.

Also, 4-stroke trailies with ring-ding exhaust. *Lots* of that in the 80's.

Note that this is the work of sound editors, not the Foley folks.

Pardon my pedantry, it's not Foley, but effects editing. Foley is paralleling action against a projected image in a recording studio. Footsteps etc.

Or recording them as a separate exercise, alternatively seeking them out in an effects library (which are vastly superior to the tape ones in this digital age)
Budget wise the first is the way to try. If you're lucky the sound person has been able to access the action vehicle during the shoot.

I was grateful to my assistant on a movie on which I was editing sound for telling me of the unique engine sound of traditional London taxis, and that I could find them in an FX library. And 'library' may be the problem. Action vehicles aren't always held or recorded for post production purposes.

Yes, I guessed the problem was probably having like 4 different motorcycle sounds on tape and choosing between them. It's funny, because some films are really good at getting the sound right, and others are just "insert generic sound here".

Sound editors, not Foley artists. Foley artists do foot steps, door slams etc, editors grab stuff from the sound library. Just sayin'. Always annoys me too, and I have been a sound editor for forty years or so.
