Re the hair rule, not there aren't long-haired guys, but is Dorna expecting more women on the grid? There's plenty of long hair containment of various sorts going on in WorldWCR. I think that, this season, everyone but Ponziani has long hair. Maybe one or two others further down the field.

I'm confused though. If this rule had been in place then Márquez et al would still have needed to go to pit lane to change tyres after the 3 minute board? So there would still be chaos, but now they would all get penalties? So there are consequences but it doesn't avoid a delayed start?

Marquez went in because he thought he would only have to start from the back of the grid. (He was wrong about that). But now he knows (hopefully) that he will have to serve 2 long laps. Changes the calculation.

Yes that's what I understood but isn't a double long lap less of a penalty than starting from the back, if you're on pole? Or anyway, it's still better than a pit lane start? Anyway, prob overthinking a very rare situation.

Tricky, but I don't think so. Not much in it, but very different.

But the rules have basically been simplified so everyone knows what the penalty is. Too many complications under the old rules

Good update, David. I agree with the changes, but the rules about leaving the grid should have been made immediately after CoTA because two races were run after the scene in Texas and the same thing could have happened again. When I problem becomes apparent it must be solved at once, NASCAR style.

Agreed, but you know better than I how the rules are made (I learned it from you!) and that it was all done by committee. Getting everyone around the table and agreeing is always the hard part.

I know he penalized himself at COTA, but I really wish that MM were held to account for the debacle he caused.

I think he should have been given an extra penalty, but Ducati would have appealed it. There weren't any clear rules he broke, really.

These new rules change the calculation, mean it's not worth pulling those sort of shenanigans
