When other people in your country, especially people who might be trying to rob you, have firearms, it’s not a bad idea to have a firearm yourself for self-defense.

Really? How often does that work out positively? Compare the numbers of robbers being shot vs. people being shot by their own "self defense" gun.
The biggest danger to you and your family is your own firearm.
You are just trapped in the mindset pushed by NRA and arms dealers.

I’m speaking as somebody who has been held up at gunpoint and robbed. The problem there is lack of gun safety training, not the guns themselves. Inanimate objects can never be responsible for the actions taken with them. Perhaps if the NRA had continued to just teach people gun safety…

Rules are simple:
My guns are locked in a safe in my bedroom. The firing pins and ammo are locked in a safe in my garage. Keys are kept separate.
Rules: never touch when intoxicated, angry or scared.

Guns in a safe in your bedroom, firing pins and ammo in the garage… Let me know how it goes when you hear a burglar breaking in at 2am. You are aware that home invasions are a thing, right? I had a friend and his family held at gunpoint in his living room while two men took all of his valuables.

Random home invasions are rare. Usually the victim is a target within a criminal society.

I get it. But it is more than just the gun culture. It is the glorification of violence in general. It is apparent for an outsider. It is in the justice system, pop culture and all of the media. Revenge, medieval eye for an eye mentality that offers violence as an easy solution.
