I've been there. Long, long, long ago. I still have a leather keychain I bought while there. Somewhere. Tucked away. I really enjoyed my trip to #Italy, #Florence #Rome #Pisa #Venice
Fun fact 1:
Did you know that Florence was the first European city to have paved streets? The stones were laid in 1339!
Fun fact 2:
Most towns in the US and Russia, are still not fully paved.
My favourite European city. Many a day spent exploring and eating at some amazing restaurants or just soaking up the history with a glass of wine or two. ๐
I lived there as a student. The Stanford-in-Italy โdormโ was the 450 yo Villa Il Salviatino, now a 5-star hotel. I studied Renaissance art and architecture. It changed the trajectory of my life!
Beautiful picture! We were at Florence a couple of months ago and it was really beautiful. I love how pedestrian-friendly most European cities are, no need for a car.
Geralyn, give yourself a minimum of two full days at the Uffizi Gallery (reservations) It's amazing. I was standing in front of The Birth of Venus by Botticelli... tearing up. Also don't miss the Medici Chapel with many works by Michelangelo.
Someone else probably said it but, that bridge with the buildings on it, is the only remaining of the old bridges..the Nazi's blew up the rest to cover their retreat. They all used to look like that, very lovely really. You can see it from the Uffizi
Can someone please name the German officer who, in 1943, ignored an order from High Command to blow up all the bridges over the R. Arno, to slow the Allies' advance northwards towards the Alps? Without that hero, we would have lost the spot where Dante Alighieri fell in love Beatrice #ForzaFirenze
Good starting point. Then do the food tours, side trips to Pisa, Sienna, etc. Prosecco Hills. Quick trip to Venice, and then it depends on your vacation time if you want to explore further or save it for another trip. I recommend the food tours.
The food tours were well thought out. Appetizers, wine nearly everywhere, cheeses, and then to the mains. Wild boar dishes were incredible. We did not have "pasta". We ate food generally unique to Florence and Tuscany. Gelato at the end of each tour at some of the better places.
