When they originally began co-producing with Disney I gave it a pass. But I’m watching S1 for the first time and there are some good eps so far and you are right, Ncuti IS owning it!! 🔥
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that the Doctor would be alive for so long and change exactly zero amount. Suddenly he can't be emotional because it's not exactly the same as he was in 70s Who?
There are legit so many examples of this with every modern doctor, and while I've only seen half of classic I can think of similar points for them too so it's not out of character nor overblown imo
Thanks for the tip - my first Doctor was Jon Pertwee so I'm no Johnny-come-lately - I really struggled with ep 1 but I'm glad it's worth investing in the subsequent ones.
Same.
Although I just about remember Pat Troughton, too.
I struggled with Tom initially, and Peters 1 & 2.
& Matt took a whole series to get my head around.
Latest one was really good. Also shines back to the memorable quality of Davies's work with Tennant such that when the reveal happened I genuinely let out an audible "oh fuck!"...
Yeah, I'm the type who likes pushing the limits for what who will do and the lengths to which companions and The Doctor will go.
The way I thought the S1 finale could have ended kinda summarises that. I was more thinking that the Trickster is actively involved and to stop Sutekh...
a sacrifice like that of Andrea in S1:E8 of the Sarah Jane Adventures has to be made to correct the timeline and prevent Sutekh from being summoned. Also, side note, that episode of the SJA was so dark. I'm not spoiling it because if you haven't watched it IT'S SO GOOD, GO WATCH IT!!!
I agree and this 2nd Gatwa season is an improvement on the first (thus far) which was a bit hit n miss to say the least. A minor quibble is that 15 doesn't really have an identifiable, iconic look like previous Doctors in terms of costume. Too much raiding of the dressing up box perhaps.
I love him in it, amazing energy and bounciness but also deep emotion when needed. And Varada Sethu brings a real warmth to Belinda. Plus the two of them are stunning!
The way Season 2 leans into the “Doctor with different costumes” using the running bit of the TARDIS providing appropriate clothing adds something new and I love it.
Idk, I REALLY liked the beginning of Lux but then it became really cheesy. They keep introducing such interesting villains and immediately killing them off which I find such a waste. I get it's aimed more at family now but The Sarah Jane Adventures had more intense moments.
Season 1's finale really disappointed me though because they purposely teased at the most intense ending ever involving The Trickster (and I was expecting something like Season 1 Episode 7/8 of The Sarah Jane Adventures, it's so good) and then used wishy washy magic tech which felt cheap. BUT...
But, there are still really great concepts, I love most of them. Beyond the standout misses there is a lot of potential in every episode which is why I stick around. Overall, if you enjoy it, I'm glad, and it just might be my cup of tea, but family fun and emotion can be balanced together.
Best in years, is possibly not as high a bar as it could be... but I'll take your tip and might give it a try. As a life-long fan from the '80s, I'd started giving up on it in recent years.
Still convinced the cancellation rumors are a deliberate ploy to blur reality and fiction as the season approaches a meta finale where 15 has to keep the show from being cancelled to survive and save the universe - perhaps as a launching pad for the Whoniverse.
Never really got into the new ones personally (I grew up watching the old ones, ending at Sylvester McCoy), but there does seem to be a lot of unnecessary whingeing. If people think the old series never had weak/bad storylines they weren’t paying attention!
I’ve seen the odd episode, I just couldn’t get into it. Probably partly because I didn’t like Ecclestone much, though Tennant & Capaldi seemed quite good.
I think Eccleston is much better when handling scenes were the doctor feels particularly at odds with himself if that helps. But I really do recommend giving the "Nu-Who" era a go.
I agree - I'm a huge admirer, but the commercial pressures look quite powerful. He's extremely sought after now and the contract was only ever for two...
First two episodes of the first season were bad. Especially the one with the singing in it. Since then, it’s been very good. Returning to Midnight was an interesting twist.
Was thinking I was perhaps too old now to ‘just go with it’ but yesterday’s episode, The Well, was outstanding - I suspect we may have seen a contender for any list of top 10 episodes…
Why would you comment just to say "I don't know what I'm talking about and should be muted"? I mean, thanks for the warning, but it's a weird thing to type.
Unnecessarily hostile?
This was the first episode that felt like an actual dwho episode, avoided most of the ‘second content’ issues and didn’t feel like a cbbc show.
A) Do not do Sarah Jane like that, Season 1 Episode 8 gave me a fear of death like no other show has since.
B) Give a little more criticism than "It's bad and I don't like it >:("
There are really great concepts, and it goes some way to pulling it off, it just doesn't always land for everyone.

That's what happens when you balls it up last year.
But the writing has been grim. The Doctor, who has been around for millennia, is now reduced to too many "woe is me" moments.
Try picturing ANY of the previous Doctors doing the same.
He doesn't need to be Tennant or Smith of Capaldi, but he DOES need to be The Doctor.

I prefer Moffat’s era. It was all about allegory & mystery.
I think Davies and Chibnall don't really do subtext. It makes it a little too 'panto' for me.
I still watch & enjoy, but it's hard to become immersed.

Just tweak the music/voice sound balance, please.
Sometimes the tech is the problem.
& I truly believe an actor should portray the character for 3 years, or fewer.
He is an enigma (as is Mr Gatwa) and a brief stint helps keep that intact.
Eccleston being the prime example.
NB.
I'm almost 60,I've seen a few come & go.
I've a fair idea why Ncuti gets the muttering.

Read the room. At best you're being incredibly rude.
Why would anyone care about your opinion when you insult them with your first reply?
Etiquette is important.
