Biggest problem with modern Star Wars rip-offs is that Star Wars itself was a rip off of about 10 things, and the current crop of wannabes are just ripping off Star Wars. At least with a spin off you don't need to spend half the run time being defensive about what you're ripping off

This is true enough, and part of it is I just do not find Star Wars as compelling a setting as a lot of people apparently do; I guess I was privileging works that do a little more than just rip it off
Although in fairness when I hear Star Wars ripoff I always think Eragon so
